Parenting Support Group for Parents of Neurodivergent Children, in Cincinnati, OH

Parenting a child with neurodivergent needs offers many meaningful experiences, yet it can also present challenges that are difficult to navigate on one's own. Many caregivers find themselves uncertain when conventional parenting guidance doesn't fully align with their child’s unique emotional, sensory, or behavioral needs.

In Cincinnati, OH, this neurodivergent-focused parenting support group offers a nurturing and supportive environment for parents. Here, parents can deepen their understanding of their child’s development while gaining emotional support from others who share similar journeys.

Rather than feeling isolated, caregivers become part of a community where they can share insights, receive professional advice, and learn practical strategies to respond more confidently to everyday situations. The aim isn't to achieve perfection in parenting but to foster greater understanding, stability, and connection within the family.

How Group Sessions Work

At Ascent, we know that navigating a world that often feels like it wasn’t built with you or your child in mind can be a monumental challenge. It can be even more complex when raising a child with a PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) profile or any other neurodivergent traits. While there is a strong emphasis on parents with neurodivergent kids, especially those with a PDA profile, all parents and their unique struggles are welcome.

The group is for parents to bring their challenges into a group setting where they can receive advice not only from other parents, but also from Dr. Lauren Elder. In each session, parents can seek advice and help each other navigate the challenge before them. Every session is designed to help you learn new ways to help your child navigate a world not built for them. From struggles in school, emotional regulation difficulties, sensory sensitivities, and behavioral concerns, topics and resources vary from week to week.

Parents never have to share. Those who don’t feel ready to engage in the conversation, are welcomed to respectfully listen and reflect on the stories and information shared by others.

Our approach aims to empower caregivers to transition from a reactive mode of parenting to one that is informed and responsive. By engaging in these discussions, families can develop long-term strategies that enhance their understanding and strengthen their relationships.

Emotional Impact on Parents and Caregivers

Emotional Impact on Parents and Caregivers

Raising a neurodivergent child can be both rewarding and challenging, occasionally leading to feelings of exhaustion and the risk of caregiver burnout. This is especially true when caregivers are navigating these challenges without adequate support or resources. At Parenting Outside of the Lines, we create an affirming and inclusive space where caregivers can connect with others who share their experiences. This sense of community helps alleviate emotional strain, fostering understanding and acceptance rather than judgment.

Many caregivers find immense relief upon discovering that their experiences resonate with others in the group. This emotional validation is a crucial element in reducing stress and enhancing overall wellbeing, as it affirms caregivers’ feelings and experiences. We are committed to ensuring that every caregiver feels supported and understood in their journey.

Practical Parenting Support and Real World Strategies

This parenting group goes beyond emotional support. We provide practical, everyday tools tailored for parenting both at home and in school settings. Caregivers gain strategies for managing emotional outbursts, facilitating smooth transitions between activities, addressing sensory overload, and enhancing communication with their children. This group empowers parents to collaborate effectively with schools, therapists, and support services. By equipping families with these practical tools, we help create structured and predictable environments, reducing stress for both parents and children.

Understanding Neurodivergent Development

A key part of this group is expanding the caregivers' understanding of their neurodivergent child's unique ways of perceiving the world. It's crucial to recognize that children with neurodivergent traits engage with different sensory inputs, communication cues, and emotional signals in ways that are unique to them and different from the societal norm. These are not behaviors to be corrected but rather developmental differences that require acceptance and thoughtful support.

By fostering this awareness, caregivers are empowered to respond with patience and effective strategies, rather than experiencing frustration or confusion. Our group is dedicated to shifting perspectives through education that enhances empathy and provides clarity in parenting decisions, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Who Can Benefit From This Support Group

All caregivers can benefit from this group! There is an emphasis on caregivers of children with neurodivergent diagnosis/tendencies, however all caregivers are welcome to join.

This support can also be crucial for parents who are actively seeking an evaluation or simply trying to understand their child’s unique thought processes and needs. The group remains a place of inclusivity and support, so no matter where you are in your parenting journey you are able to participate. All caregivers need support from time to time and at Ascent Psychological Services, we are honored to help you in your unique journey.

Building Confidence and Reducing Isolation

One of the strongest benefits of group participation is the alleviation of emotional isolation. Many caregivers might feel as though they are solitary wanderers in the intricate journey of parenting, particularly when those around them may not fully grasp the nuances of neurodivergence. Engaging in shared discussions allows parents to discover that they are not alone in their experiences. This sense of connection fosters emotional resilience and diminishes self-doubt. As time progresses, caregivers frequently gain confidence in their parenting strategies, feeling more empowered to navigate challenging situations.

Long Term Benefits for Families

In the long term, engagement in this group can benefit the family by encouraging growth and education not only in the parent, but in the family system as a whole. This leads to increased family well-being. Parents often enhance their emotional regulation abilities, refine their communication strategies, and gain a richer understanding of their child’s unique needs. This fosters healthier parent-child relationships, reduces household stress, and promotes more consistent daily routines. Additionally, families are likely to develop robust support networks, enabling them to sustain progress even beyond the group sessions.
